What is IPv6?
IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) is the next generation Internet protocol designed to replace the current Internet protocol. The current Internet protocol is version 4 now referred to as IPv4. IPv6 is short for IP version 6 and represents a significant change from the old IPv4 protocol.
Why is IPv6 being deployed?
IPv6 is being deployed to get unique globally routable IP addresses, for two reasons: IPv4 addresses are running out and there are networks with more devices than can be currently assigned unique globally routable addresses under IPv4.
If you plan to deploy a significant number of servers, software, devices, or hardware in the future which requires unique globally routable address space, then IPv6 is the solution for you.
